Kamis, 07 Juni 2012

Tanah Datar, West Sumatra. Defending Tour de Singkarak team champion Azad University had to wait until the third day of the race before seeing one of its riders climb onto the podium.

The Iranian teams new recruit Oscar Pujol Munoz of Spain won the third stage on Wednesday after finishing the 102-kilometer race from Payakumbuh to Istano Basa, Tanah Datar, in two hours, 37 minutes and 40 seconds.

Munoz was eight seconds ahead of Joel Pearson of Genesys Australia and Mohd Saufi Mat Senan of Terengganu Cycling Team, who finished second and third, respectively, with the same time. He became the first Spaniard to win a stage in the tour.

Three different riders have now won the first three stages and Munoz can expect tougher races ahead.

The 28-year-old Spaniard, who joined Azad University in April, said that fitness would be the key to victory in the Rp 1 billion ($108,000) race.

The most important thing in the tour is to recover well after every stage and, of course, the team has to develop a good strategy to be in front of others, Munoz said. I hope to maintain this good performance.

With its two steep climbs, the third stage was the hardest for the riders in the Tour so far.

Munoz broke away from the leading group during the second climb at Batipuh, around 83 kilometers from the start and kept his lead until the finish line in front of Istano Basa, a famous palace in West Sumatra.

Masakazu Ito of Aisan Racing Team, who finished with the lead group in 2:37:48, kept hold of the yellow jersey. The Japanese rider had a total time of 7:37:38, six seconds ahead of Genesys Jai Crawford.

Robin Manulang of Araya Wim Cycle team was the fastest local rider finishing seventh in the stage with the same time as Ito, but Putra Perjuangan Bandungs Dadi Suradi still led the Indonesian riders classification, coming fifth overall with a total time of 7:37:58.

I will try to [remain the local leader], but the ultimate goal is still to help the team win the Tour, Dadi said.
