Think Guns and Roases and Axel Rose screaming “welcome to the jungle it gets worse here every day, learn to live like an animal…” Sorry but I can’t get it out of my head as we pass kilometre after kilometre of thick impenetrable tropical jungle. This place is full on! From the traffic to the wildlife to the incredible rivers that seem to blast through the jungle at every turn in the road. The food is full on too, would you like more chilli with your stone cold chicken? More mayonaise on your fruit salad? Don’t mind if I do. Its an adventure for sure and its an adventure that the Genesys crew of Sam, Blake, Joel, Kane and new recruit Jumpin Jai Crawford are relishing. After an arduous 48 hrs of travelling on trains planes and automobiles we finally arrived in the magnificent town of Sawahlunto, tired but ready for this years edition of the Tour De Singarak in the West Sumatran region of Indonesia.
The tours first stage was a short 77km loop starting and finishing in Sawahlunto. After 500m of neutral, yes 500m the race was on and headed straight up a 3km long 4% climb… just to ease into things. From there is was a series of twists and turns through undulating jungle and inumerable towns before acending the same 3km long climb (but from the other side) and dropping back down to the finish. The usual flurry of attacks eventually saw a group of 17 gain a minuite on the peleton with just over half the race distance covered. Blake and Jai made the move and with most of the big teams represented they managed to gain two minutes before the peleton sorted themselves out and started a belated chase.
At 10km to go the break still held 1:05 and would fight it out for the win. Blake moved Jai into position as they came into the climb, riding a solid tempo to keep him out of trouble. An attack by the Australian team caused a reaction with the Japanese national Team then Asian Racing leaping across with Jai content to follow, biding his time. As the intial attack faltered a counter by an action Cycling rider served to blow the race apart with only Asian Racing and Jai able to react. The three plumeted dow the descent to the finish with Action taking too many risks eventually over cooking a tight hairpin corner with jai narrowly avoiding t-boning him. Unfortunately the Asian rider managed to slip by and managed to take the win with Jai 2″ back in second.
Blake rode strongly to finish 11th with Sam in the 20’s and Kane and Joel at the back of the main group.Early days yet but a good start and a promising “genesis” for Jumpin Jai Crawford.
